I am a Survivor

Please share this blog with your friends, family and others. Thanks! There’s more to the story but it’s just a blog post. I am currently writing a book called Are We Art? which will include more information, my poetry, short stories and my art. The book is almost completed but needs finishing touches before I will publish it.

Here’s a sample writing from my book:

Our lives are vast canvases, ever evolving. Each stroke, a decision; each color, an emotion; each layer, a chapter. The question isn’t if we are art, but what kind. In the Appalachian heartland, my story began, shaped by the rugged landscape, family determination, and a relentless quest for knowledge. From childhood health challenges to becoming the first in my family to attend college, I’ve lived a tapestry of trials and triumphs. Moving from my small town to the sprawling university campus was like stepping into a new world. The poems here are not just words, but fragments of my soul. They represent the moments that defined me, the trials that tested me, and the resilience that sustained me. As you turn the pages, you’ll walk through the various chapters of my life, seeing how each experience has contributed to the painting that is my existence. This is not just my story. It’s an invitation for you to reflect on your own journey and see the art within. Are we art? Perhaps a better question is: what kind of art are we destined to become?

One can endure challenging times, even during another failed Trump/GOP Administration. essential to unite resist and persevere together.

Despite facing unemployment, near homelessness, and countless obstacles, I refused to let others’ actions dictate my destiny. My journey was far from easy, but my determination never wavered.

During my first degree, which took 11 years due to numerous setbacks, I encountered a professor who seemed intent on preventing my success. He gave me low grades despite my hard work, but I persevered. When family responsibilities took precedence, I put my education on hold to care for my grandmother. Eventually, I resumed my studies and transferred to The Ohio State University, earning a degree in Nutrition after many years of dedication.

In my professional life, a manager pressured me to pursue further education, unaware of my financial struggles and student loan debt. Despite the challenges, I maintained my position until unfair tactics led to my forced leave and loss of employment. My appeal for unemployment benefits was initially blocked, but persistence paid off, albeit too late to save my home and car.

I moved forward, drawing strength from my experiences. Even after losing everything, I found ways to survive, including helping my parents with their business and relying on food pantries. Eventually, I secured a job and rebuilt my life.

My story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination. No matter the obstacles, I refused to let them define me. I’ve been knocked down but never knocked out. Remember, you have the strength to overcome any challenge. If I can survive and thrive, so can you. Keep faith in yourself, and never give up.

In the end, the experience of art teaches both the artist and the audience something valuable. Artists learn to trust their instincts and express their truth, while viewers are encouraged to look beyond appearances and embrace complexity. This mutual growth doesn’t need to fit into neat definitions. It thrives in discussions, in debates, and in quiet moments of contemplation. As people navigate their own understanding of art, they unlock a world filled with endless possibilities, where every interpretation matters.

There’s freedom in recognizing that art can’t be confined to rules. The essence of art is to challenge, to inspire, and to enable conversations that might not happen elsewhere. Each piece reflects a myriad of perspectives, creating a rich tapestry of emotion, story, and truth. This recognition is what allows art to remain relevant, breathing life into discussions about society, culture, and individual experience. It’s about the journey each person takes with the artwork and finding the shades of gray that connect us all.
